Whether you are healthy or live with a chronic illness, your time on earth is precious. Your life is precious. One good thing about living with Sickle Cell, it allows you to understand better than most that there are consequences to all of your actions. It can help you see how fragile life can be and teach you to appreciate every day you have rather than take it for granted. At times it can be easy to think life with Sickle Cell has no beauty. Rest assured, it has. The beauties in life are all around you and without number. Take the time to recognize them. Value them. Enjoy them.
There is beauty in the night sky, in the twinkling of the stars, the glow of the moon, and the immensity of space. There’s beauty in the morning light of a new day and the hues of the setting sun. There is beauty in the blooming of flowers and the taste of food. There’s beauty in the animals that exist, in all their variety, which can provide entertainment and companionship. There is beauty in friendship, in relationships, and the bonds that tie you to the people you love. There’s beauty in all the things that make you a unique person.
Beyond the pain you suffer, there is joy and peace to be found. Take the time to see and feel it. Share the beauty you observe with those you love. As you do so, not only will your life be enriched, but you will enrich the lives of the people around you. This is what it means to live well with Sickle Cell. Enjoy life, my brothers and sisters; you have much to live for.
