Priapism & Sickle Cell
For guys, this can be one of the more embarrassing complications that may occur as a result of having Sickle Cell Anemia. A priapism is an involuntary prolonged erection caused when sickle cells block blood flow to and from the penis. Priapisms can occur in boys and men of any age. Often, it is triggered during the night when the bladder is full, though all the reasons why it happens are unknown. The condition can last hours or days. If untreated, a priapism can cause a patient to be infertile and impotent. It’s very important to seek immediate medical attention if such a condition should arise—forgive the pun—and not self-correct after a few hours.
